Inability to maintain weight in an adult cat is not likely to be from GI parasites. After cats reach maturity they have generally developed some immunity to the most common and dibilitating GI parasites and don’t tend to carry high parasite loads. It is much more likely that your cat is suffering from some other medical condition and the sooner you get an accurate diagnosis and start treatment the better for your cat. Spending money on OTC dewormers when you don’t even know that worms are an issue and when worms aren’t likely to be the big issue is more of a waste of money.

Sounds like diabetes or hyperthyroid to me. Does the cat go out that he would be exposed to worm infestation. He really needs to go to the vet. Also there is no 1 medicine for all worm types.

If you can’t afford to care for the cat anymore, turn him in to a nokill shelter or your vet.

Stop trying to play doctor with a 13 yr old cat. OTC wormers are too toxic and its probably more then just "worms" your cat has. There could be many things wrong. Take your cat to the vet to be properly treated.

Taking you cat to the vet should be your FIRST option.Cat first;you

there is no otc stuff you can get to treat your cat effectively. you don't even know that it is worms. it could be hyperthyroidism which usually strikes a cat at that age. all the worm medicine in the world will not do any good if that is what is wrong. you need to get him in for a check up and thyroid panel. then daily medication (which is not expensive). do it for your pet. it is the responsibility that you agreed to when you got a pet.

Aww, it’s "gross". POOR you having to put up with a "gross" cat. How long have you let this cat just suffer without doing anything about it? And are you aware that having a clearly sick animal and doing nothing about it is FELONY ANIMAL NEGLECT?

There’s no store bought wormers that will kill all types of worms and it would VERY idiotic of you to give your cat a dewormer when you don’t even know what worms it has or even if it has worms at all. Whatever cheap, dangerous store crap you give it would most likely make your cat SICKER.

This cat needs a VET whether it "taxes for budget" or not. If you don’t allow funds in your budget to care for your cat then you shouldn’t have one. So either get it to the vet immediately or take it to the nearest no-kill shelter so someone that can afford to care for it and is more responsible can adopt it.

edit: sad you manage to buy an Xbox and a mountain bike but that caring for your cat is "taxing" on your budget.

If your cat is having problems maintaining it’s weight and is 13 yrs old is really needs to be taken to the vet. Sounds like it may have thyroid disease and not worms but you won’t know for sure unless you take it to a vet. There is no dewormer that gets rid of all types of worms. Cats can get tape worms, round worms, hook worms and coccidia (which is an intestinal protozoa). Over the counter dewormers don’t work very well anyway…you would be wasting your money and end up having to go to the vet anyway. If your kitty does in fact have thyroid disease it is going to have to be put on medicine for the rest of it’s life. Please take you kitty ASAP!! I know money is tight for everyone right now but your kitty could die w/o treatment very soon.

There is no medicine that effectively cures all worms available over the counter. If it is worms, you'll need to get a broad-spectrum wormer from your vet. Please stop making excuses and get your cat to the vet now, you are neglecting him.

Honestly, and this is from experience, you should take the cat to the vet to be treated for worms. I’ve never seen anyone be able to get completely rid of worm infestations with anything over the counter. A 13year old cat deserves to be taken to the vet. Most of what you can buy over the counter treats only the most common types of worms, and you have to buy a completely separate wormer for other types, like tapeworms, for example. You’ll come out cheaper in the long run if you just go ahead and take the cat to the vet.
