* Lie on your back with your knees bent. Keep your back in a neutral position — not overly arched and not pressed into the floor. Avoid tilting your hips up.
    * Cough to activate your core muscles. Holding the contraction in your abdominal muscles, raise your hips off the floor.
    * Align your hips with your knees and shoulders. Hold this position and take three deep breaths — or for about five to eight seconds.
    * Return to the start position and repeat. For a challenge, try alternately extending one knee while maintaining the bridge position.

This actually works. Breathing and alignment plus the movement is an excellent home remedy. Hope this helps. Good luck.
References :
Good call on not using the NSAID, i have had some crazy stomach issues from them. I am now using a product called Flexcin that has worked wonderfully for me. I was also taking 10 1000mg omega 3's a day, but have cut down to 5. They worked wonders as well. You can take a look at http://www.zerojointpain.com for more info.

Good luck!!
References :
I have experienced what research reaffirms, ice is the best topical pain reliever.
I also recommend chiropractic treatment.
References :
So sorry to hear what you are going through, you are not alone there are thousands of us with ths same or worse problems.

After verifying with my doctor that I have slipped discs, bulging discs, degenerative discs and nerve problems , etc, etc, my doctor gave me pain relief, anti inflammatories as well as referring me to a physiotherapist. I very rarely take the inflammatories or pain relief these days except in emergencies like when I have a back spasm and end up on the floor and finally having to stay in bed for several days.

The light exercises I do on a daily basis with specific stretches and ball work to strengthen the lower back muscles are helping a little to alleviate the constant pain.

I would suggest you pose the same question on :
http://www.backpain.com.au/forum/index.p...
I certainly found it helpful and you can stay anonymous if you wish or join it costs nothing.
References :
Acupuncture!! No side effects and very effective pain relief. There is a recent article from some Neurosurgeons who have started using acupuncture for their patients with problems similar to yours.
